This is a critical part of being a successful leader in your MLM, network marketing or direct sales business. Most people can detect if you are being fake or insincere. Do you really want your MLM downline to think this about you? It would be a huge detriment to your success, as well as their’s. Doing business does not have to be cold and calculating. Studies have shown that people respond better and work harder for leaders that genuinely care about them.
What does it mean to genuinely care? Well, it means that you are interested in everything about a person. Not just what they can bring to the table business wise. What are their hobbies, lifestyle, strengths and weaknesses? You know. The things that make a person who they are. If you know a big life event is coming up don’t wait a week after it has occurred to contact them! This can come off as disingenuous.
If you want to have a dream team that will bend over backwards and jump through hoops to succeed you have to stay up-to-date on what is going on in their personal lives. Making strong memorable connections is the most important skill you can learn as a business leader.
Here are some tips that can help:
1.) Take notes and review them often until you don’t have to anymore. This can help if you have a fairly new or large team. This also helps when meeting new prospects for you MLM downline. Imagine how they would feel the next time you connect with them and you mention something that is significant or personal about them like family, pets, hobbies, etc.
2.) Use reminders in your calendar. This is a huge help when you need to remember big life events that will be coming up in your MLM downline members’ future. For example: A birth of a baby, a big trip, graduation, birthdays, holidays, wedding days, etc.
3.) Ask many questions. The best way to get to know people is to ask them questions, lots of questions. Here are some questions that you can use:
- If you could live anywhere, where would it be
- What would you change about yourself if you could?
- What is your favorite game or sport
- Have you ever had a nickname? What is it?
- If money was no object, what would you do all day?
- What are your hobbies?
- How would your friends describe you?
- If you were a super-hero, what powers would you have?
- If you could go back in time to change one thing, what would it be?
- What was the last book you read?
- What is your favorite childhood memory?
- Do you collect anything?
- Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
- Tell me about your family. Are you married? Do you have children?
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years.
- Do you have any pet peeves?
- Do you speak more than one language?
- Are you a cat person or a dog person?
- What is your favorite food dish?
- Do you like to travel? If so, where have you been?

You are not alone. Many people sign up for an MLM, network marketing or direct sales company only to find out their sponsor is a brain dead zombie. It happened to me too. My first mlm upline was straight out of The Walking Dead TV show. No joke. It is unfortunate, but just like me, it is not the end of the line for you. Remember, your goal is to be someone else’ mlm sponsor or mlm spline. Its important to stay positive and do your best to become the sponsor you always wanted your sponsor to be.
Here are some tips on how to survive the mlm upline zombie apocalypse:
1.) Try to find someone in the same company that is doing well and mimic what they are doing. Reach out to them and let them know what is going on with your upline. Most people will be willing to help someone that is not in their downline, even if it will not benefit them. Don’t let anything deter you. It could be someone higher in your mlm upline or someone you’ve noticed online.
2.) Get access to as many training materials as you can. Go to all the company events and bush elbows with the top earners. Find groups specific to your company on Facebook as a lot of these groups share knowledge and tips with one another. Keep in mind, some of the techniques taught by your company might be old school.
3.) Use attraction marketing. Create an online presence where people seek you out, not the other way around. You can get the best prospects this way. Why? Because they were actually looking for something you are offering and didn’t feel “pressured” or “coerced” into signing up for your business opportunity. In my opinion, this is the best way to recruit.
4.) Think about switching to another company. This doesn’t mean you gave up. It means you need to do what is right for you. If you have tried to reach out for support and all attempts have failed. Why would you want to stay with a company that does not want to help you? If the reason is because you love the products then by all means stay. Work your butt off and do whatever it takes to succeed. I know you can do it!!

Is your direct sales up-line inexperienced, incompetent, or just plain absent?
I’ve been there too.
It all started in 2008.
I was invited to a home party and the concept of direct sales and the products blew me away. I wanted to try it!
I was ready to begin something new and exciting and it might even allow me to quit my 40 hour a week job that I had been slaving away at. I was tired of not being home with my kids and it killed me being a single mom and never being home. I even purchased the biggest, most expensive, starter kit they had.
I was ready to go. I was pumped up. I wanted it more than anything.
But… to my shock.
I was ignored.
By my own up-line!
The very same people that invited me to their home party!
They never offered to help me. They never called. I even worked with one of these people and was politely brushed off when I asked for help. He said he would have his wife call me.
That never happened.
I contacted the company and asked if I could sign up under someone else. They were sad to hear that I was having a bad experience but told me I had to wait 6 months to close my account and sign up under another direct sales consultant. Six months is a long time and I wasn’t having that after the amount of money I had already invested.
First, I was sad.
Then, I was confused.
Then, I felt used.
And finally, I was mad!
I wasn’t going to let this defeat me!
So, I went online and started researching how to market business’s using the internet.
I wanted to learn how to use social media sites without looking like a spammer, gain people’s trust and grow my team with people that wanted to succeed in direct sales, multi-level marketing or network marketing as much as I did.

How often have you heard the someone say, “He or she is a born leader?” There are certain characteristics that seem to come naturally for some people that often make others see them as a great leader.
Can someone really be a natural born leader or did they develop skills and abilities to become a leader from their environment? That is a good question. Either way, the important part is the leader has strong characteristics that can be developed by anyone if they so wish.
No-one follows someone they do not trust. A leader needs to be trusted and be known to live their life with honestly and integrity. A great leader “walks the walk and talks the talk” and in doing so earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the good character and trustworthiness of the person who leads.
They should be enthusiastic about their work and their role as leader. People respond strongly to someone with passion and dedication. Leaders should always be a source of inspiration, and most importantly, be a motivator. A good leader acts as part of the team working towards the goal together with much enthusiasm.
To lead well and set directions a leader needs to appear confident. This inspires confidence in others and makes the team or followers feel they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to. Think of it as the glue that holds everyone and everything together.
Staying positive in times of uncertainty is extremely important. People will feel reassurance and secure in a positive environment. A great leader will never talk negative or show negative behavior and body language. Positivity keeps a healthy environment where others can feel relaxed and happy.
5. Drama Free
A great leader works with all different types of personalities. Its important that a leader refrain from joining in or condoning negative talk or behavior. The less drama, the better. Keep personal issues private as drama will only cause others to feel uneasy.
With a goal in view, a great leader can break it down into manageable steps and make progress towards it. Staying organized and keeping on top of things in an orderly fashion can be of great help when working towards finishing a goal in a timely manner.
Always committed to excellence. Never settle for second best. A great leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar in order to achieve excellence in all areas. Never gives up and keeps their eye on finish line with gold metal as the prize.
These 7 personal characteristics that I have listed are so important for great leadership. Some of these characteristics may come naturally to some people. However, each one of these characteristics can be developed and strengthened by anyone this is willing to do so. Stay consistent and diligent and the rest will follow.
